AFGHAN TALIBAN thugs kill young couple in love

What say you, Obama? Are THESE the moderate Taliban you are trying to appease?

A young Afghan couple trying to elope were dragged before a Muslim court, sentenced to death for “immoral acts,” and shot by a Taliban firing squad outside a mosque in a remote, desert region, officials said yesterday.

Gul Pecha, 19, had been unhappily betrothed by her parents to marry another man when she fell in love with Abdul Aziz, 21, provincial authorities said. They decided to run off to Iran to marry “because their families would not approve the marriage,” said Gulam Dastagir Azad, governor of Nimroz province. The area borders Iran, where millions of Afghan refugees live.

But last week, Pecha and Aziz’s families sent armed thugs to chase down the love-smitten couple and drag them back to their dirt-poor village, Lokhi.

A council of elders debated for two days what to do with them. They deadlocked between two choices: Half the elders wanted to execute them, and half wanted to allow them to marry, according to a district leader.

At that point, the Taliban, which rules remote regions with an iron, fanatical fist, stepped in.”Three Taliban mullahs brought them to the local mosque and they passed a fatwathat they must be killed,” said Azad. The couple was hauled before a firing squad on Monday and shot with AK-47s in front of the mosque.

The barbaric Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001, and imposed severe religious restrictions, including forbidding unmarried men and women from even talking in public.

Azad said that even if the couple had committed a crime, they should have faced a court process that would have taken months to prove their guilt. “How can these people make a decision in four days and kill them?” he said. “No one has the right to kill anybody without the decision of a court.”

But Azad said the area “is almost out of the control of the government” and the Taliban can do more or less what it wants.
