Talk about a clash of civilizations. Germany has created a provocative TV ad for sexy lingerie that is paired with that most asexual of any garment – the burka – symbol of the domination of Muslim men over women.
Is it not ironic that the very piece of clothing that is used to deny Muslim women their sexual identity, or any kind of identity, is now being used to make sexual objects out of the burka-clad Muslim woman? This ad does not just sexualize any form of Muslim covering such as a headscarf, but goes straight for the most restrictive and most political of Muslim coverings…the burka.
French President Sarkozy has been a strong proponent of the burka ban, which is set to go into effect imminently, and has been quoted as saying, “The burka is not a religious sign, it is a sign of the subjugation, of the submission of women. I want to say solemnly that it will not be welcome on our territory.”
Produced for online lingerie website “Liaison Dangereuse“, the company is now planning to show the clip in cinemas in Germany, according to its press department. When it was released online, the ad caused quite a stir in both Muslim countries and elsewhere. Some women did find it empowering – no doubt what the creative directors were hoping for – but others felt the ad belittled Muslim women. OBSERVERS.france24
