Iraqi-Americans in metro Detroit are celebrating today the execution of the man known as Chemical Ali, the Iraqi minister who used chemical weapons in his suppression of thousands.

Some gathered tonight at the Karbalaa Islamic Education Center in Dearborn to mark his death and remember his victims. Many locally have loved ones — friends, family members, and neighbors — they say died because of the actions of Ali Hassan al-Majid, a cousin of Saddam Hussein called Chemical Ali Majid, a former military leader in Iraq, was hanged today in Iraq for his crimes against Kurds and Shi’ite Muslims in 1991.

“Today, our prayers have been answered,” Mehdi Alsalami, 12, of Dearborn, said from the center. “We’ve been waiting a long time for this day, for this man to die.” LINK
