In her new book, ‘The Devil We Don’t Know,’ Nonie Darwish reveals the ugly truths behind the ‘Arab Spring’

Did the Arab Spring mark the beginning of a bright new future for the Middle East, a new era in which democracy will flourish, freedom of speech and religion will be seen as absolute rights According to Middle East expert Nonie Darwish, there will be no democracy, no freedom, and no new economic opportunity, and the violence and repression have already begun.

In The Devil We Don’t Know, Darwish reveals the unpleasant truths behind the Arab Spring: the students, activists, and young professionals who initiated the Cairo protests represent only a tiny minority of Egypt’s population. Other groups, such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Salafi, shared their desire to oust President Hosni Mubarak, but for entirely different reasons. Now that Mubarak is gone, says Darwish, these radical conservative factions have seized the initiative to further their own goals, including waging war on Israel, expelling Coptic Christians from Egypt, and engaging in jihad against non-Islamic nations.

Darwish presents a brief history of the cycle of revolution and dictatorship that has plagued Islamic nations of the Middle East since the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. She finds a common thread among all of these regimes, whether military, monarchist, or ideology driven. They have all been Islamic states in which sharia, the divine law of Islam, supersedes all others, forbidding freedom of speech and religion, as well as gender equality. Under sharia law, any ruler who refuses to conduct jihad and advocates peace with non-Muslim nations can be removed from office.

She describes how the rigid, authoritarian class structure demanded by sharia law precludes any possibility of democracy or equality, and she laments the fact that among all of the many placards carried by protesters in Tahrir Square in January 2011, she didn’t see a single one demanding “Down with Sharia.”

Darwish also examines the effect of the Islamic revolutions on the state of Israel, the rise of Islamic apostasy in recent years, and whether the uprisings have helped or hindered the budding Arab feminist movement. Further, she explores the impact of these rebellions on the West and whether they will lead to a reduction or an increase in terrorist attacks by Islamist groups.

Backing up all of her claims with hard facts and solid, well-reasoned arguments, Darwish makes it clear that she has no fear of controversy, and The Devil We Don’t Know is sure to provoke plenty of that as events continue to unfold.

  1. OPEN YOUR EYES….All the regimes and islamic movements especially Molim Brotherhood, in the Middle East, were always supported by the USA. Depending on the situation and benefits, the United States move everything the way they want from under the table. If it is necessary to show Islam as a peaceful religion, then they will, but if it is required to prove the contrary, then Islam will stay the monster and the threat, until further notice.

  2. I agree with the writer that all the regimes in Egypt that came into power since the independence were tyrannic ,but she couldn’t avoid exposing her cajolery to Jews .Moreover she couldn’t prove how could the Muslim brotherhood be the devil (or may be a collaborator of him)while they have been submitted to various kinds of political isolation since the 20s of the 20th century?

  3. One thing no one is mentioning is the effect of oil wealth. With out oil islam would be a back water religion with limited options to expand. Any workable strategy towards islam must include the development of competative energy technologies so that oil is reduced to the role of an interesting chemical feedstock, with a commensurate value.

  4. We need those who inform us, but WORDS ALONE will not save us and futur generations from this Demonic Pestilence called Islam. More importantly we need those who will take the WAR to Islam and destroy it. It is the greatest present perversion of Spirituality on this planet. Islamists must be recognized as a Pestilence, Rat Like in their disease spreading potential.

  5. Nonie is not guessing. She is an Egyptian ‘INSIDER’ from an establishment family.

    REPEAT: Nonie is NOT guessing.

  6. DUH it’s called the Caliphate.
UN makes the laws that fit with mohommedists.
    Belgium is the court.
    EU the police force.
The caliphate is the Sharia based mohommedist fascist state. to enforce the [religion]
    Together it is the NWO.
The world banks move product and money as necessary to punish or reward the nations.

  7. I love this brave honest lady. I pray for her safety from the barbaric Muslims.
As I said many times, it is IMPOSSIBLE to rule Arab Muslims with democracy system. The Koran and hadiths will not allow it. I also, motionedd that the Copts demonstrations after the killing of 7 young Copts on January 7, 2011 that this is the end of the silence the Copts demonstrated, and enduring the genocide for over 1400 years. However, the so called Arab Spring managed to kidnap the message from the Copts and destroy any hope for the Copts. We have to ‘thank’ the Devil in the WH who who orchestrated this theatrical and extremely dangerous event.
We, Americans, are in a more dangerous situation than in the ME. obama planted his poisenous seeds, if gets another term he will help sprouting these seeds and hell will break.

  9. duh. Did you all expect anything less? Look at their history- from the ancient battles, like The Battle of Thermoplyae, when they overran Europe in the Dark Ages, to the Crusades, to when they took the Byzantines in the mid-15th Century (and Trebizond in 1461)… all the way down to now… they have an old saying (paraphrasing)- ‘when in the minority, we are as lambs… when in the majority, w are as wolves…
