A Salafist group called the Popular Egyptian Islamic Association has come under fire after sending out a warning on Facebook urging its followers not to eat tomatoes because the vegetable is a Christian food. (See the white ‘cross’ in the center)
Iran Aware The group posted a photo on its page of a tomato – which appears to reveal the shape of a cross after being cut in half – along with the message: “Eating tomatoes is forbidden because they are Christian. [The tomato] praises the cross instead of Allah and says that Allah is three (a reference to the Trinity).
[God help us]. I implore you to spread this photo because there is a sister from Palestine who saw the prophet of Allah [Mohammad] in a vision and he was crying, warning his nation against eating them [tomatoes]. If you don’t spread this [message], know that it is the devil who stopped you.”
Predictably, Facebook users expressed outrage over the post, which prompted the group to clarify its stance on the controversy with the update, “We didn’t say you can’t eat tomatoes. We said don’t cut it in [such a way that reveals] the cross shape.”
I wonder if the Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate, Mohammad Morsi, is happy about getting an endorsement from this group?

Spanish and Italian discoveries and takeovers in the 14th Century. So, are there Christian crosses on corn and the humble potato as well?

First, it would be the 15th Century when Columbus came across the “New World” (1492), not the 14th (the 1300s).
Second, if you cut a potato, you can sometimes get a cross to show in the center, depending on the potato’s shape and the darker lines that sometimes show up in potatoes (after all, the potato is a tuber, a root).
Third, an ear of maize can sometimes grow in a cross shape, though it isn’t all that common.
So, I suppose the Mohammedans will have to give up potatoes and maize,too… there goes two of the world’s most staple food sources.
At this rate, they’ll end up starving themselves out of existence.

“Crusader” Chili Verde
1 lb pork shoulder
2 – 7 oz diced green chilis
1 – 16 oz can stewed tomatoes
2 TBSP Bisquik
2-1/2 tsp garlic salt
1 large onion
2 TBSP olive oil
1 TBSP Butter
2 c. water
Cut pork into 1/2″ cubes. Combine pork w/ garlic salt & 2 TBSP Bisquik. Heat skillet with olive oil. Sear pork until white. Cut up onions and sautee in butter.
Combine all ingredients in crockpot. Cook on high for 3 hours. Makes 8 – 1 cup servings at 220 calories.
ENJOY the best damn chili verde in the West. It goes well with rice. Make sure to serve it to your muslim friends for great table-time talk!
