As a former prospector in the Wilds of Canada, I like his reasoning. I prefered a shot gun in case of Bear attack, as it’s always a close contact, where knock down power is necessary.

I’ve been wondering about smaller vs. larger caliber handguns for a while. I’ve heard proponents of “stopping power” repeat over and over that the Pope was shot seven times with a 9mm and lived.
I’m glad to see an expert validate my position though. I have argued for the “psychological stop” intuitively because (1) I’d rather carry more rounds than run out of a “deadlier” round quicker (2) a hit with a smaller round is more effective than a miss with a larger one (3) an attacker does not want to be hit by anything and since you’re defending yourself – i.e., you want to break off the encounter – any hit will likely ward off pursuit from someone who simply wants an easy victim (4) the simple fact of demonstrating you are also armed or returning fire should do the trick since bad guys don’t want to get hurt – they can always find another target who is harmless and (5) smaller caliber allows for quicker target reacquisition after every shot.
If I was an attacker and I got winged by a .22 I’d feel very lucky to break off the encounter and not need to go to a hospital to have a round of any size removed from my body with the police sure to get involved, confirming that I was the criminal described by my victim.
.22 caliber is also the preferred assassin round because it’s quiet, but still very lethal.

O, BNI, that was SO sweet of you!! So thoughtful – as always…
I don’t own a gun and don’t know a damn thing about them; but in this crazy world – and I live on my own – it might not be such a bad idea to get one and learn how to shoot it from a pro and like a pro!!

Joy, only the best for my readers. LOL
June 22, 2012 @ 1:07 am
Good on ya’ Joy! 🙂

Love it! I’m proud to be a licensed CHL gun carrying ,passionate Tea Party member, red blooded American.
I prefer my S&W snub nose 38 for personal protection, I want to stop the bad guy dead.
No court time, no prison on the tax payer, and no retribution after the creep gets out of the slammer.
June 21, 2012 @ 10:59 pm
Where have you been all my life? Lol!;)
June 22, 2012 @ 12:56 am
use some star hollow point +P rounds in that 38 and you will stop the bad guy for sure.
June 21, 2012 @ 8:06 pm
@BNI: Thanks for running this topic. 🙂
June 21, 2012 @ 8:51 pm
randy, I thought you’d like it.
June 21, 2012 @ 11:01 pm
Ah, you’re so thoughtful BNI!
June 21, 2012 @ 6:32 pm
We have canceled and use 45’s, 40’s, 357 mag.,380, side by side 12 ga. pump 12 ga, 20 gage pump, 410 single, and various other big weapons. So yeah I am one of those bitter clingers.
June 21, 2012 @ 6:08 pm
Some time ago I read an authoratative article that mentioned that .22 LR weapons were used by the Navy SEALS.
June 21, 2012 @ 5:51 pm
ps: a good sharp samurai sword, one of the shorter ones designed for fighting inside a house is also use-full.
even a pistol crossbow with a laser sight is better than nothing.
June 21, 2012 @ 5:46 pm
i have used (deep breath): .22lr, .32 webley, .32 s&w, .32acp, .38 spec, .357mag, .44mag, .45acp, .45colt, .455 webley, 8mm nagant, 7.63 mauser, .9mm.
the .22 was easily the most fun and the easiest with which to obtain good accuracy.
a near miss with a 44 is about as much use as a chocolate brake disk.
ammo is dirt cheap and a large amount can be carried comfortably.
i read somewhere that 22s are the prefered weapons for many gang members, i don’t know how true that is though.
June 22, 2012 @ 12:49 am
bilbo, My favorite is an AR15 5.56 pistol with a 7in. barrel, 40 round clip, laser and red dot scope. I use a 45gr. hollow point round that has very little recoil and does much damage.

Well if the ‘shit hits the fan’ in the USA then no doubt it will happen here too (UK), just make sure you guys supply us with the necessaries (lend-lease as with WWII) and we’ll do the rest here. Whatever machine gun you recommend but I’d love a Barret .50 Cal for use in the Dales 😀
June 21, 2012 @ 3:52 pm
When it comes to *big toys* our American friends definitely are the ones best placed to advise you. With the reverse lend-lease the thing I’m not sure off is if it can be used also between countries who signed it, or if it just to/from the US.
My worry in all that is when it comes to us helping friends, given the traitors at the helm, it very well be that any help needed would come from people themselves, not heads of state!
June 21, 2012 @ 7:33 pm
I’m thinking along the same lines as you on that. Especially with President Hollande in office. If and when circumstances require, you guys need a way to get armed and fast. You have a large muslim population and government will not respond to your public safety needs. I’m not trying to sound like i’m hatching a conspiracy and some kind of international smuggling scheme, and I do not want my words to be construed as such. I’m just pointing out a possible turn of events and the need for a larger segment of Europe’s true conservatives to fight and demand your natural rights to safety and self defense, the right to reasonably arm yourselves. Yea, I know it’s easier said than done. I will be very hard to do in this current climate. We Americans were lucky in this regard because we already had a constitutional amendment over two hundred years old to work with, yet we still have difficulties in some recalcitrant jurisdictions who place undue restrictions upon gun posession, by dubious and unconstitutional means.
A never ending battle it seems but truthfully, we actually are winning this fight. Only one state out of 50 has absolutely no concealled carry law, and that state is Illinois, Barack Obama’s state, go figure.
June 22, 2012 @ 5:55 am
Randy, perfectly understood as meant. To be honest, I think if the *top head* is rotten, best to ignore it and use/rely only on yours. Hence leveling the playing field (thanks Dubi) as mentioned above, as one-sided is no longer acceptable. And your above mention of the saying ‘Tis better to be tried by twelve’ is a true and wise one.
June 21, 2012 @ 4:27 pm
Can’t get good firearms?! You might want to consider starting a good sword collection! My in-laws in Taiwan can’t have firearms either but there is hardly a dwelling anywhere in the country that doesn’t have at least one good sword, with genuine carbon steel and a good solid tang (the two main things to look for when purchasing a sword), as opposed to a SLO (sword like ornament), that is generally good for nothing but hanging on your wall, if that!!
June 21, 2012 @ 5:59 pm
Wow, I was under the impression that the Taiwanese civilian population was well-armed as a sort of Swiss/Israeli style civilian militia in the event of invasion from the mainland. I guess I was wrong on that one.
I do however think it would be wise for Taiwan to adopt such a policy as it would help act as a deterrent against Beijing’s ambitions.
June 21, 2012 @ 7:11 pm
Yes, I wish there was a way for you all in the UK to get firearms legally, or not so legally if things go south real fast, such as a totalitarian move on the establishment’s part. The trick would be to keep them out of the muslim’s hands as well. That is a population segment who absolutely need to be prevented from posessing guns.
June 21, 2012 @ 1:50 pm
I guess the advice is ok for those ALLOWED to own firearms, alas we are not (UK). Just as well really, I’d be extremely dangerous nowadays and so would many, many others.
June 21, 2012 @ 2:08 pm
To be honest Ever Watchful, since -here anyway- some have no qualms arming themselves, comes a point when some serious evening of grounds (if this term is correct) will have to be applied.
June 21, 2012 @ 4:02 pm
I think the term is “leveling the playing field”. I wonder where all the kalashnikovs are coming from? And they aren’t afraid to fire on the police or anybody else because of the government. Give the police the right to use deadly force and the populace the right to self defense. Anyone using a firearm to commit a crime should be hung in a public square to make an example, or bring back the guillatine!
June 21, 2012 @ 6:43 pm
Ah yes, thank you for correcting me Dubi.
I’ve been racking my brains to try and remember something I saw recently about those Kalashnikov provenance after there was a raid on arms trafficking, but it eludes me for now…
Police have the right to use deadly force if shot at/attacked, but they get so much grief from do-gooders for it… Remember that episode not that long ago when police shot at some vermin, and all the noise about the implication of ‘presumption of self-defense’ for police? Makes me want to puke!
When it comes to our self-defense, as I’m sure you’re aware, many aren’t waiting for anyone’s permission to exercising that right, but if you mean armed self-defense, that’s another story!
June 21, 2012 @ 7:50 pm
Great point Alain, we have a saying when it come down to that very issue. “‘Tis better to be tried by twelve* than carried by six**.”
* = (Jurors)
** = (Pallbearers)
June 21, 2012 @ 6:58 pm
Possibly, but that could be a good thing to have a sizeable portion of the population armed to the teeth. The government would, in essence tend to be far more respectful of it’s constituent population. The evil truth about gun control has nothing whatsoever to do with public safety and crime reduction, no matter what they tell you. It has everything to do with keeping totalitarian control over a country’s populace. When law-abiding citizens are armed and lawful concealled carry provisions are in place, violent crime rates go down. Do not believe the propaganda of the left on this. Even the FBI’s violent crime statistics support this reality. Also, consider the source of anti-gun advocates. They are generally always left-of-center. Has not the UK under Labour governments virtually made self-defense against violent attacks a crime, even when firearms are not used (or posessed) by the victims? Even in one’s own home? That is utter rubbish and morally repugnant. In essence, it is placing more value on the life and safety of the criminal over that of the victim. utter evil is what it is. Only depraved, self-serving governments would think this is justified.
A gun is an inanimate object. It is a gun. It is what it is and conveys no special powers over sane, law abiding adults. Do not think it will make you or others extremely dangerous by any stretch, and of course there are those who have no business with them. One must respect guns, handle them safely, and keep them secured, out of other’s hands, especially children too young and untrained in their proper use, but that is easy to mitigate.
June 22, 2012 @ 10:50 am
You are so right Randy. I believe with all my heart, that if it were not for the fact that we have several million armed citizens, and not only armed but know how to use and will use their weapons when needed, we would have become a socialist/communist or muslim nation by now. But with the government knowing that for every gun that is registered there are probably even more that aren’t and they don’t want to start a civil war at this time because they know they’d have a very hard fight.
I also believe we have a majority of military personnel that would stand against the government, if need be.
Obama and his group do have some fear of ‘the people’ and don’t want to get caught up in a losing effort.
June 21, 2012 @ 1:18 pm
Okay not qualifying for Bonni’s description but… *drools* can I have one of those, pleaaaase?
June 21, 2012 @ 1:07 pm
