I have to admit, when I first heard about the rockets on the apartment block, I didn’t hear the surface-to-air part, and was imagining a Muslim in the stadium crowd standing up with a bomb, and soldiers firing a missile into the stadium! I appreciate that they are going to great lengths on security, but i feel, it’s only delaying the inevitable. It may not be the Olympics, but eventually a plot will find it’s way past the security services, and innocent people will die.
This problem isn’t just going to go away, and despite how many get put away, there will always be more to take there place. Now If the trend was that Muslim youth were becoming more western as time went on, then we could focus on just arresting and imprisoning the minority. And granted, those willing to commit violence is only a minority but that minority is 1.fast growing as is the Muslim populace 2. As these grow and the trend continues, instead of a handful say a few hundred willing to commit violence there will be several thousand.
Those that sympathise will increase, as will those willing to commit civil disorder. The 2001 Oldham riots already showed the Pakistani youth willing to burn and rampage the streets, and that was 11 years ago. If you add populace growth and increasing radicalisation, segregation and resentment towards the state, it’s only a matter of time before another more violent riot occurs.
And again perhaps policing has changed since then for the worse, but the state could not gain order of the country during sporadic outbreaks of disorder.
I never used to believe those that mentioned civil war or territorial conflict as a possibility until the London riots. If the state could not control a bunch of kids wanting to steal some Nike trainers, how on earth would they be able to stop mass groups of men possibly with weaponry (just saw a group in the news with an IED!) so dedicated to their cause, that their life or preserving it has no meaning?
