Neither man understands that Islam is the reason they are backward. If the colonizers had left them with democracy, it wouldn’t have lasted till evening prayer.

Hi Bob. This Sheikh is a Saudi. Can’t remember his name, but he sits on some kind of Saudi government advisory commitee called the Sura Council, and must have some powerful patrons I think. At any rate, He gets it, and he is spot-on in his assessment of contemporary Arab culture. Keep in mind this interview occurred before the advent of the so-called Arab Spring. I would be curious to hear his take on this.
At any rate, it is too bad there aren’t more muslims as brutally honest, objective, and as intelligent as he in the Arab world. He is certainly a well-educated, realistic man.
Sadly, I’m afraid he is the exception, not the rule.

He did a good job of not speaking to the premise that the export of islam to the West was a positive quid pro quo. Addressing that issue honestly (which I have no doubt that he is well qualified to do) would definitely not be in his immediate best interests.
