UK convert to Islam who was convicted of plotting to kill Prince Harry has been jailed for three years. Ashraf Islam, 31, said he had a “moral right to judge” as he disagreed with the work of the British Armed Forces, of which Prince Harry is a member.
BBC(h/t Ros L) The judge at Isleworth Crown Court in London described Islam’s plot as “vague and unlikely to succeed”, but said he presented a risk to the public. Islam, of no fixed address, had been living in west London at the time.
He was arrested after attending Hounslow police station on 23 May last year – a day after soldier Lee Rigby was murdered in Woolwich. Islam pleaded guilty to making a threat to kill Prince Harry, at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court in May last year.
Islam, who was born Mark David Townley in Belfast but changed his name by deed poll, has previous convictions for dishonesty and for involvement in an attempted robbery.
Roxanne Morrell, mitigating, said her client had a personality disorder. (HAH! Don’t they all?)
