At least six mosques and a Muslim organization in Japan have received threats since the hostage crisis that saw two Japanese men savagely beheaded by Islamic State (ISIS) Muslim terrorists.
Japan Times There are between 70 and 80 mosques in Japan, according to the Tokyo-based Japan Muslim Association. Among 16 mosques that responded to queries, six reported having received abusive telephone calls or emails.
Mosques in Sapporo, Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Ichinomiya, Aichi Prefecture, and Niihama, Ehime Prefecture, reported receiving abuse, as did the Japan Muslim Association.
The association and mosques in Japan have condemned Islamic State as a terrorist group committing acts of brutality that are out of line with the teachings of Islam, and have emphasized that ordinary Muslims should not be equated with the group.
After the release of video footage by the militant group on Feb. 1 showing that freelance journalist Kenji Goto had been decapitated, the mosques received abusive messages such as “Die,” “Religion of murderers” and “I hate even the sight of Muslims,” as well as threats such as “Get out of Japan right now if you don’t want to be killed.”
Some of the mosques, concerned about the safety of children attending prayers, contacted local police and were advised on security measures.
Staff at a mosque in Sendai said that while they were not directly harassed, a Muslim student attending a local graduate school was turned away by an apartment landlord who vowed to refuse to rent to Muslim students. Another landlord offered an apartment to the student in response.
“There is very little contempt for Muslims in Japan. We feel contented living here,” staff at the Sendai mosque said in response to queries. (Not for long)

I don’t blame the Japanese for being upset with muslims. A visit to Osaka, I was disturbed to find a prayer room in Namba station and arabic writing in the tourist attaction, the sky building. Also riding the subway with a family pack did not improve my opinion of muslims in Japan. I can think of somethings I’d like closed in the country and a spot that could use paint.
Yes, and they also have prayer rooms in the airports now! And special menus for them.
Boy, if Christians or Buddhists etc asked for pray rooms in airports of the world, they would say no, and rightly so also, it is a private thing..

Thank you, Luci, I have been trying to tell people that Japan is not the muslim-free country that one stupid viral email has been promoting for the past several years.
Still to put it in perspective, there are more native Japanese JWs and Mormons, then all muslims foreign and domestic in Japan.
I see them in the stores, libraries, etc. and of course walking the streets all the time. I went to an Indian restaurant and a whole bunch of them came in and started their evening worship right there in front of the other customers! That was a couple of years or so ago and it turns out the owner was not Indian but is from Pakistan. He speaks Hindi so everyone thought he was Indian.
Luci, and the worst of it is how polite the Japanese are. The muslims will get away with asslifting in the streets and all the other crap they do in Japan because people are so reluctant to confront anyone behaving badly. At least they were from what I recall.

When I first saw that viral email, I hoped it was true even though I knew it wasn’t. What I didn’t know was exactly how many mosques and muslims were now living in Japan and increasing all the time. Very sad to see that. Japan would be much better off with Chinese workers if they need labor rather than muslims.

Right after the two Japanese were beheaded recently, there were reporters who went to the Mosques here and interviewed the Islamasavages and asked them what they thought about it. Of course they said “Islam doesn’t agree with or do that kind of thing, it is a peaceful religion” grrrrrr

Pakistanis in western countries and Japan are afraid to identity themselves aa Pakistanis because of the terrorism perception and hence call themselves as Indians. Even the pakistani restaurants are labeled as Indian restaurants as they know that nobody would visit a paki restaurant.

Towards the end of the war Japanese units in the Philippines were directed to kill American POWs. In Palawan, 300 POWs were marched into a ditch, fuel oil was poured in and they were burned to death. They were also very brutal to the Filipinos. Of the million Japanese soldiers sent to occupy the Philippines, less then 5% survived.

Luci, I miss Japan. Was a student at Waseda Univ. in the late ’70’s and then lived/worked there for a year a few years later. Don’t know if you remember Akastsuka Fujio, a well- know cartoonist? I was good friends with him and his circle. They were a wild group!

My recent observations are that the majority of Muslims in Japan are temporary workers (mainly from Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran and Turkey), but the number of dumb Japanese girls who marry them and convert is increasing. The police don’t have the resources to monitor that threat. The political commentators still cling to the idea that Islam is a great religion hijacked by extremists. It seems that the change will come not from above, but from the street.
